Wind farm's closure 'no surprise'

Tasmania’s wind farm industry is not surprised that the Danish wind turbine producer Vestas is closing its plant at Wynyard on the north-west coast.

The plant has only been open for three years.

Vestas is closing its Wynyard plant, which employs 65 people, at the end of the year.

It is blaming market conditions and logistics for the decision.

The managing director of Tasmanian wind farm Roaring 40s, Mark Kelleher, says Vestas’ decision is disappointing but not surprising, given the Federal Government’s lack of support for renewable energy targets.

“We’ve been encouraging the Government to do something and bring in some more policy support, but this is really just another outcome of that decision,” he said.

Treasurer Michael Aird says he is disappointed by the news and the State Government is working with Vestas to try to keep the factory open.

Vestas says it is committed to providing the best possible outcome for the employees.
