New green energy bridge proposed

http://news.bbc.co.uk

A system of causeways that doubles as a renewable energy scheme has been proposed as a new link between North Uist and Harris in the Western Isles.

Offshore wind turbines would be installed next to the bridge, which would have built-in tidal generators.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) is setting up a steering group to look into the £140m idea.

The Sound of Harris is crossed by a ferry, MV Loch Portain, which sails between Berneray and Leverburgh.

The causeway project would involve three miles (5km) of bridge structure with a section which could be raised to allow ships to pass through.

Representatives from the council’s transportation and sustainable development committee, along with two councillors from North Uist and two from Harris, will sit on the steering committee.

They will investigate the technical, environmental, financial and political implications of the scheme.
