Local company Dokie Wind Energy Inc. has won approval from the provincial government to build a more than $600 million wind farm in the Peace River region of northern B.C.
The wind energy project, which is the first of its kind in the province, has received an environmental assessment certificate from the Ministry of Environment. In order to get the certificate Dokie made a number of commitments to the environment and to the local infrastructure.
These include two years of monitoring of birds and bats to make sure that the wind turbines don’t interfere with animal habitats and migration, the preparation of a plan to prevent surface erosion, the appointment of a full-time environmental co-ordinator and ongoing communication with nearby towns and First Nations communities.
The 300-megawatt farm will be placed on high-elevation ridges where there is a constant source of heavy wind. The project is expected to create 300 construction jobs and 30 permanent operations jobs. Wind energy advocates say that B.C. has a lot of potential for more of these projects in the future.
