CONTROVERSIAL plans to erect three giant wind turbines on the moors above Penistone are expected to be submitted by the end of this month.
Although the height of the turbines at Crow Edge is now expected to be reduced from 125 metres to 100 metres, villagers say they will still fight “tooth and nail” to prevent them ever being built.
They are angry at what they say is the “ridiculous” intervention of Penistone Environment Group which is supporting the plans and calling on villagers to “give wind power a chance”.
The Crow Edge action group, formed to oppose the plans, have met to discuss tactics.
Chairman Alan Pestell said: “I think the comments of the Environment Group are completely out of order, it’s ridiculous.
“We have already successfully twice opposed plans for turbines on this particular piece of land, surely that proves we have a very valid point.”
Banks Developments, which operates a landfill site near Hepworth Building Products at Crow Edge, wants to erect three wind turbines on the land to capture wind to generate electricity and sell it to the National Grid.
An existing windfarm of 13 turbines, which are 75 metres high, is already operating at nearby Royd Moor.
But residents who live within 1,000 metres of the proposed site in the Foxhole Grove area say they don’t want more turbines near their homes.
Mr Pestell said: “The action group will be holding a meeting in September as soon as we have seen the submitted plans.”
