A big extension of an Airtricity Scottish wind farm has been given the go- ahead today, the renewable energy group says.
North Ayrshire Council’s Planning Committee gave the green light to an extension to Airtricity’s Ardrossan Wind Farm at Busbie Muir.
The committee unanimously approved a planning application to erect three additional wind turbines and associated infrastructure, increasing the capacity of the wind farm from 24MW to 30MW, the company said.
Councillors were told in a report by planning officers that the wind farm has been generating renewable energy for some two years and has been “well received” by the local community.
With the extra three turbines, bringing the total to 15 turbines, the Ardrossan Wind Farm will generate 30MW of green electricity, enough power for 18,750 homes. It will contribute to tackling climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 85,000 tonnes a year, the group said.
“Work will start later this year on the new extension”, said Alan Baker, chief executive of Airtricity Scotland.
“The three new V80 turbines, like the existing ones on the site, will be manufactured and assembled at Vestas in Campeltown and the wind farm extension will ensure that Airtricity keeps to its commitment of providing local jobs in Scotland,” he said.
