Wind farm campaigners step up fight

The Penicuik Environmental Protection Association (PEPA) has been formed by local residents who want to protect Auchencorth Moss from the massive wind farm planned by the German energy conglomerate E.ON UK.

The group believes that the proposed site, which is one of Scotland’s few remaining raised peat bogs, will be irreversibly damaged by the industrial development.

The protest group’s website can be accessed by logging on to
www.pepawind.org.uk.

John Thomson, spokesman for PEPA, said: "Wind farms benefit nobody, except landowners and multi-national energy companies. They make almost no impact at all on carbon dioxide emissions – despite claims by the Scottish Executive. This is especially the case when peat, a carbon sink, is lost in the process.

"It will damage tourism, an important source of income for local residents and ironically cause untold environmental harm to vulnerable migratory birds and to the delicate and ancient peat moss at Auchencorth."
