Utility Wind Interest Group to Change Name, Tax Status

In a letter sent to the UWIG membership on November 14, UWIG President Henry Durrwachter said, “This name change provides a more clear focus on our role of serving as an objective source of knowledge and information in technical matters dealing with integration of wind energy into utility systems, while simultaneously keeping the UWIG logo, name recognition, and reputation.”

Durrwachter also announced that UWIG will change from a 501c(6) to a
501c(3) corporation, noting that: “the primary difference is that the former can lobby, and the latter cannot. This change of status will help to make clear that we are a technical organization and not a lobbying or advocacy group for wind. We believe that this change to more firmly align our name with our mission, and the change to our corporate status, can only help us to better accomplish our objectives.”

Durrwachter noted that the change comes amid a tremendous amount of activity for the organization, including organizing a special issue focusing on wind integration in the IEEE Power Engineering Society’s Power & Energy magazine and announcing the formation of a Wind Turbine Operation and Maintenance User Group and an aggressive agenda for activities for its other four user groups. UWIG also recently achieved a key milestone with the addition of its 80th organizational member.

The Utility Wind Interest Group (UWIG) was established in 1989 to provide a forum for the critical analysis of wind technology for utility applications and to serve as a source of credible information on the status of wind technology and deployment. The group’s mission is to accelerate the appropriate integration of wind power for utility applications through the coordinated efforts and actions of its members, in collaboration with The U.S. Department of Energy, its National Renewable Energy Laboratory and utility research organizations. UWIG’s membership spans investor-owned, public power, and rural electric cooperative utilities; transmission system operators; and associate member corporate, government, and academic organizations.
