Decade of Constraint Payments
2019 was the tenth year in which British wind farms have received constraint payments to reduce their output because of electricity grid congestion. There has been a total of £649 million paid out over the decade for discarding 8.7 TWh of electricity. To put this in context, this quantity of energy would be sufficient to provide 90% of all Scottish households with electricity for a year. Because of a rapid growth in wind farms, particularly in Scotland, the total paid . . . Complete article »

Analysis of Wind Farm Performance in U.K. and Denmark
Executive Summary 1. Onshore wind turbines represent a relatively mature technology, which ought to have achieved a satisfactory level of reliability in operation as plants age. Unfortunately, detailed analysis of the relationship between age and performance gives a rather different picture for both the United Kingdom and Denmark with a significant decline in the average load factor of onshore wind farms adjusted for wind availability as they get older. An even more dramatic decline is observed for offshore wind farms . . . Complete article »

Wind Turbine Noise Complaint Data
Introduction In 2007 the then Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – later renamed the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) – commissioned the University of Salford and the Hayes McKenzie Partnership (HMP) to investigate the issue of Aerodynamic Modulation (AM) noise from wind turbines. (AM noise is a blade swish noise at blade passing frequency, and is a characteristic of wind turbines.) This was in response to an earlier report for the DTI by the HMP, “The . . . Complete article »
