Wind Farm in Cape Vincent, NY

Richard Wiley

Cape Vincent, NY, in the scenic, unspoiled Thousand Islands Region of New York is a proposed sight for what is now 96 towers by St. Lawrence Windpower, LLC, (SLW). Their “Impact Study” can be viewed at stlawrencewind.com/documents.html.

The normal techniques were used by the Company to launch the project. Town Board members and Town Zoning members were courted and signed agreements before the public was made aware. Interested public was given few straight answers and the study was withheld by the Town Board until their “ducks were in a row”.

This project will be joined by another company (name not known to me) who has already made agreements with landowners, one being the Chairman of the Zoning Board.

At first the public was told that they would not affect our only economic source, the St. Lawrence River because of setbacks. But now they are to surround the resort village and will be viewed from most historical and residential areas.

The land that is being sacrificed is mostly viable farm land which is also used for hunting and recreation. The companies will have the advantage of very little sight preparation and how the project will affect the tax base is not clear.
