Two Ripley families say they’ve moved out of their homes because of what they say is the negative health effects of living too close to wind turbines.
“We can’t live in our house anymore. We bought a house and moved to Kincardine. My son and daughter-in-law and two-year-old who live on a different farm . . . the wind company is paying for them to stay in Kincardine,” said Glen Wild, one of a half-dozen speakers at a public information session . . .

MONTEREY — Neighbors near the proposed wind energy utility on Allegheny Mountain became alarmed this week when a large truck with a drilling rig was seen poking holes in several places where turbine towers might go, and a few times, loud blasts were heard.
Highland New Wind Development LLC recently submitted site plans for a 38-megawatt electric facility, and asked the county to issue a building permit by July 15 so construction on 19 turbine towers could begin soon.

State: No turbines in grouse areas

State officials recently reached a decision not to allow wind development — or even a pilot study — in Wyoming’s sage grouse core areas.
It’s a potentially huge blow to several wind development projects, including Horizon Wind Energy’s Simpson Ridge project and Power Company of Wyoming’s Sierra Madre and Chokecherry wind projects — all in Carbon County.
Gov. Dave Freudenthal issued the core areas sage grouse management plan by executive order in August 2008, mapping out the state’s best sage grouse habitat . . .

The dramatic growth in wind turbines around the British Isles may lead to huge spikes in power prices by 2030 and threaten the viability of backup plants needed for calm periods, according to Poyry Energy Consulting.
Britain and Ireland have ambitious targets to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, with wind turbines expected to reduce most of the climate warming gasses from the power sector.
But the level of wind energy envisaged will lead to extreme price swings by 2030, with times of . . .

Around seventy anti windfarm campaigners turned out at Lerwick Town Hall this morning (Wednesday) to hand in a petition with more than 3,600 signatures, opposing plans to build a 540MW windfarm in Shetland.
The signatures, collected by campaigners from Sustainable Shetland, were presented by 13 year old Rachel Smith, a second year pupil of Brae High School.
Viking Energy, a partnership between the utility company Scottish and Southern Energy and the Shetland Charitable Trust, lodged a planning application for Europe’s largest onshore . . .

Wind power generation is expected to be a clean and environmentally friendly natural energy source, but a new kind of environmental problem has surfaced as infrasonic waves caused by windmills are suspected of causing health problems for some people.
Shinjuro Kondo, 76, who moved into Higashi-Izucho, Shizuoka Prefecture, 17 years ago, said, “Stiff shoulders, headaches, insomnia, hand tremors…Since February last year, soon after the test operation of windmills started, I developed various kinds of symptoms.”

Two wind-testing towers came down this week after Taos County threatened to prosecute Taos Wind Power if it did not remove them.
One located on private property approximately 8.2 miles southeast of Tres Piedras and another 3.5 miles north of Tres Piedras, the towers were approved by the county Dec. 4, 2007.
The purpose of the 197-foot-tall, 10-inch-diameter towers was to analyze wind conditions at sites proposed for electricity-generating “wind farms.” The test towers were supposed to come down last December, though . . .

But now Carolyn sleeps with earplugs and sometimes finds the farmstead’s old chicken coop, well insulated and being converted into a studio, the only refuge from the noise.
Dennis plans to get a decibel meter and keep a sound diary to document the drone they complain has brought an industrial soundtrack to their idyllic country retirement home 15 miles . . .

The RSPB has raised “serious concerns” about the Flixbrough Grange windfarm development, revealing rare birds live in the area of the proposed development.
A pond in the north of the site has been the home of marsh harriers and bitterns since at least 2005, research by the bird charity as shown.
But developer Ridge Wind said it had considered the environmental impact of its development and was sure there would be no damage caused by the windfarm.

“I remember the first meeting walking out with the unambiguous understanding that our original proposal was completely unacceptable to the town,” Charlebois said of a meeting in January on the wind project. “We went back to the drawing board.”

South Australia must be careful about becoming too reliant on wind power, the Essential Services Commission has warned.
SA was already second only to Denmark in the proportion of electricity generated by wind, the commission said.
By the end of next year capacity would exceed 1000MW – equivalent to nearly a third of peak demand.
“The Commission remains concerned with the long-term safety and reliability of the electricity system in SA,” it says in a paper setting out a draft decision on licensing . . .
