Campaigners are calling for a cut in council tax for homes blighted by wind farms in Mid Wales. They claim new plans will devalue their homes.
They say plans to build hundreds of turbines across Powys - many approaching the height of Blackpool Tower - will wipe thousands of pounds off the value of nearby homes.
They now want to see reduced council tax bills for all homes within three miles of any windfarm.

Powys County Councillor, Wynne Jones, portfolio holder with responsibility for regeneration and development, said Mid Wales electricity network would need upgrading if the majority of 19 possible windfarm sites identified by the Welsh Assembly Government document TAN 08 are given the go ahead.
A Spokesman for National Grid also confirmed it is looking at the possibility of a 400kv line . . .

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s development control committee passed plans by Denbighshire wind farm developer Tegni Cymru last Thursday, despite refusing an identical application in March.
It will allow 11 wind turbines to be sited on land at Mynydd Portref, where there are already 20 wind turbines manufactured by Nordtank A/S of Denmark.
When fully operational, the wind farm can produce enough electricity to power 5,729 homes . . .

It is obvious now, that with Government ministers planning to build 4,000 more onshore wind turbines across the countryside, they care nothing about safeguarding basic human rights.
They are putting all their efforts into achieving some stupid ideological goal which is unachievable. And most worrying is the fact campaigners fear ministers . . .

Rhondda Cynon Taf planning officers had recommended the council approve the proposals.

The application called for eight new turbines, some as high as Big Ben, between Maerdy coal tip and Tynewydd Forest.

The Welsh wind industry has warned of a “two tier” planning system that would see smaller renewable energy projects running into difficulties, while the process is improved for large installations.
Under the government’s Planning Bill, currently moving through the House of Lords, the final planning decision will be taken by a panel of independent experts called the Infrastructure Planning Commission.
This would be instead of the Secretary of State for industry taking the decision under the Electricity Act.

I would like to bring people’s attention to the forthcoming public inquiry into the proposed extension to the wind farm site known as Blaen Bowi, near Newcastle Emlyn.
As some of you may be aware, an appeal has been lodged to the Assembly by the developers of the site, Windjen.
This is in direct response to the decision by Carmarthenshire Council to refuse the proposed extension from three turbines to six.
The council planning committee refused the application in October last year . . .

First minister Rhodri Morgan was urged yesterday to scrap the Assembly Government’s windfarm plans which would devastate some of Wales’ most stunning countryside.
Fifty prominent Welsh figures in public life signed an open letter appealing to Mr Morgan to re-think proposals for a big expansion of wind-power. They include the uplands of the Denbigh Moors and Cambrian Mountains, and an area off the North Wales coast.
Signatories included broadcasters Iolo Williams and Sian Lloyd, the Archbishop of Wales Dr Barry Morgan, Ffion . . .

Plans for a three-turbine wind farm near Porthcawl are back in the spotlight.
Town councillors have raised no formal objection to the erection of a 70m high anemometer, designed to record wind speed and direction, at Newton Down.
Renewable Energy Partnerships Ltd (REP) eventually hope to build three wind turbines, each with 80m towers and three 45m blades, on the disused airfield near Stormy Down.
Public consultation began in April and people have until July 31 to submit their views to a website.

A would-be windfarm came under the spotlight this week, as councillors visited the proposed turbine site.
The plateau between Maerdy coal tip and Tynewydd forest could soon house the 400-ft towers, if plans submitted by the Wiltshire-based Renewable Energy Partnership (REP) are approved.
Planning committee members visited two spots near Maerdy and another two thirds of the way along the A4233 towards Aberdare.
Planning officer Huw Roberts said the sites were chosen because they offered the best views of the site, around one-and-a-half . . .

Green energy campaigners have voiced dismay after their wind farm plans were blown away for the second time.
Last year, Awel Aman Tawe failed in its attempt to have a four-turbine farm developed on Mynydd y Gwrhyd, near Pontardawe, after exhausting all legal avenues.
Now, Neath Port Talbot Council planners have rejected a second application, this time for a two-turbine development.
Project manager Dan McCallum said: “We are very disappointed.
“The community voted in favour of the scheme through a referendum.

Councillors will discuss how to deal with wind farm applications after controversially snubbing Parliamentary orders to increase renewable energy production.
Earlier this year, a U-turn saw members give the go ahead to a turbine on Denbighshire moorland.
But plans for another less than a mile away were refused for the second time.
Environment minister Jane Davidson accused the council of “inconsistency”.
Now the authority will set new decision-making guidelines at a meeting of full council on Tuesday.

With the publication of the Friends of the Earth [FoE] document, Wind Power 20 Myths Blown Away, fully endorsed by Minister AM Jane Davidson, I was highly amused at the very clever way it has been worded — and the way it has neatly avoided giving a full and balanced picture — a veritable symphony in spin.
I am surprised Davidson’s advisors let her be a party to this report.

I note from this newspaper (June 16) that Tesco is proposing to put three wind turbines at its store in Llansamlet.
Fairly recently, a wind turbine self-destructed in Denmark, due to high winds, and showered metal shrapnel for almost half a mile.
Yet, Tesco wants to put these potentially dangerous machines in an area which will often be densely populated with customers.
As a consulting electrical engineer, I have always worked on the principle if it can happen it will happen.
