The construction of 31 offshore wind farms, to be ready by the year 2012, is not being totally accepted by Spaniards.
People from Cadiz, Galicia and Tarragona, Spain, are not very comfortable with the project. The objection: offshore wind farms may spoil the view.
Certainly big wind turbines make the landscape uglier, not only in the mountains but also in the sea, at least if they are not well planned.
That is precisely the issue, the Spanish Government is . . .

Many beauty spots and costa views will be blighted under a plan whereby Spain will displace natural gas with wind turbines as the main source of energy by the year 2020.

Speaking at a conference organised by Cinco Dias, Clos said the government’s target for 20,000 megawatts of installed renewables capacity up to 2010 will be boosted by an additional 2,000 MW for re-powering.

Residents in the Almarchal, Zahara de los Atunes and La Zarzuela areas, affected by the land expropriations to create space for another wind farm, were requested to attend a meeting in Tarifa Town Hall on Tuesday (17th) as a preliminary step in the process and another compulsory purchase order meeting has been scheduled for October 24th. Landowners in the areas are against the farm and are suspicious of the legality of the steps being taken by the Town Hall.

A failure in one of the wind turbines owned by the Iberdrola company in the Pedregal Mountains, Esteiro (Muros), resulted in a forest fire that razed a hectare of the mountain. Two brigades of the Department of the Environment, forest rangers, and a helicopter extinquished the fire . . .

Don Quixote would have a fit if he could see what has become of his native Spain.
In recent years, Spain, as well as Germany and Denmark, have leapt to the forefront of renewable energy technology. In Spain, that means windmills. Lots of them. Some provinces of northern Spain now produce as much as 50% of their electricity supply by farming the wind.
With good reason. Spain this year will get 87% of its energy from oil, gas and coal–up 4.6% since . . .

Mount Albaceteño brought a new fright yesterday. An aerogenerator in the Anorias Wind Facility in Pétrola began to burn at four in the afternoon and started a forest fire in the area known as La Cuerda.
As the Mayor of Pétrola, Juan Gómez, described it to this newspaper, the strong winds made the fire spread quickly. …
Around eight in the evening the fire was brought under control, although the reserve of firemen remained . . .
