The route for Maritime Electric’s high-voltage transmission line through West Prince is not a done deal, says Energy Minister George Webster.
The utility has applied to the province to build a 138,000-volt transmission line to carry wind power generated at the West Cape wind farm. A group has formed to oppose the route for the line, which would connect the O’Leary substation to the Sherbrooke station outside of Summerside. In addition, voltage on a new line ...

P.E.I. has taken out ads in major North American newspapers to explore the possibility of selling off renewable energy credits.
It’s one of the concepts in the Kyoto Protocol: jurisdictions producing green energy earn credits, and they can sell them to polluters. The credits are fines for less environmentally friendly businesses.
Though a program doesn’t exist in North America yet, there is an exchange in Europe.
“They will look at it and say it will cost me $10 ...

The P.E.I. government launched a sale of bonds on its latest wind energy farm Monday, but you have to live on the Island to buy them.
Almost all the wind farms in Canada are financed and owned by private companies, but provincial Energy Minister Jamie Ballem said he wanted to finance the wind farm at East Point differently.
“This is not going to be controlled by a major corporation in Ontario. This is not going to be ...

It may be a sign of good things to come, but right now it is causing problems.
Construction of a new 30-megawatt wind farm in eastern P.E.I. is slightly behind schedule. The reason, according to Jamie Ballem, the minister of environment, energy and forestry, is there have been too many days when it was too windy to erect the 10 turbines on the East Point site.
“There was one stretch where we lost seven out of nine ...

Prince Edward Island is moving full steam ahead toward its goal of having 100 per cent of its electrical energy from renewable sources by 2015.
Within the past two weeks, construction has begun on a 30-megawatt wind farm in the eastern part of the province. In addition, Summerside has announced the purchase of nine megawatts of wind energy and tenders have been called for the first phase of a wind-hydrogen village to be built in North ...

Blade components needed to complete 10 wind turbines at province’s new East Point energy farm.
By Nancy Willis
The Guardian
SOURIS — A freighter arrived in port from Denmark this week carrying 30 blade components for the province’s new wind energy farm at East Point.
That makes up the full complement of tower cylinders and blades needed to complete the 10 wind turbines slated for the site.
The parts will be stored at a location adjacent to the harbour until ...

An agreement for Maritime Electric to buy electricity from the P.E.I. government’s new wind farm at East Point has been approved, putting the utility well ahead of schedule on plans for renewable energy use.
Provincial legislation requires that Maritime Electric have 15 per cent of its power output generated by renewable resources by 2010, but it’s now on track to hit that target next year.
The deal was in question. It had to be approved by the ...
