At the Aug. 27 meeting, two presentations were made to the committee.
The first was by Dermott Murphy, Manager of the Nuclear Insurance Association of Canada.
Murphy, who owns property in Rossway, asked committee members to consider the fact that wind turbines have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years. At . . .

The bylaw will deal with issues regarding the placement of turbines, and will define acceptable location, minimum distance between windmills and buildings, and the minimum acceptable setback from the road.

It was all celebrations in Point Tupper at the announcement that Renewable Energy Sources Ltd. is building its first wind farm in the area.
The company’s CEO, Larry LeBlanc, told Matt Draper of the Reporter in Port Hawkesbury that the wind and concentration of industry in the Point Tupper area make it an ideal place for a wind farm.
If all goes as planned, Mr. LeBlanc said, the 11 wind turbines could be generating power by November, 2009.

ARICHAT — The deputy warden for Richmond County says he’s concerned that a proposed green energy project might do more harm than good.
Clair Rankin said Tuesday he’s skeptical about a wind farm that Cape Breton Explorations hopes to build around Bras d’Or Lake. At night, the energy from the 44 wind turbines would power underwater turbines in Lake Uist. The underwater energy would pump water into a highland reservoir.
But Mr. Rankin said local fishermen are concerned the turbines could disturb . . .

Still, Margaret Murphy of Nova Scotia Power is unable to say whether any of those projects will end up in Cumberland County, where there were several firms to submit bids.

A consultants’ report suggests the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities choose land-use bylaws or development agreements to make rules dealing with noise from wind turbines and the distance they should be from homes.
Though the report makes some suggestions, there is no single prescription for municipalities that have to set their own rules.

The project would see the development of a 22-megawatt wind farm under its power purchase agreement with NSP. RESL previously installed a turbine at the NuStar Energy/Statia Terminals site in Point . . .

The utility has signed a long-term agreement with Nova Scotia-based Renewable Energy Services Ltd., or RESL.
The company will add 11 new turbines at its current site at Statia Terminals in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., where one turbine is already in operation.
The 80-metre high turbines will deliver 22 megawatts of electrical capacity.

The 117-page study by environmental consultant Jacques Whitford outlines a broad range of possibilities available to host municipalities but says it will be up to elected officials to decide how restrictive they want to be in their approach to regulation and the specifics of their bylaws.
