REDCAR and Cleveland Borough Council has suffered a stinging defeat in its High Court bid to block plans for a massive wind farm off the North-East coast.
Council lawyers argued at London’s High Court that Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, John Hutton, had been wrong not to direct a full public inquiry before giving the go-ahead to the ambitious power generation scheme.
Mr Hutton gave his consent for the construction of the farm by EDF Energy, last September, . . .

The Indian company — the world’s fifth-largest wind-turbine maker by sales — earlier this year acknowledged that 65 giant blades on turbines it had sold in the U.S. Midwest were cracking because of the extreme gusts in the region. The company is reinforcing 1,251 blades, almost the total it has sold in the U.S.
Now, other problems are emerging, in part because the company quickly ramped up . . .

Mr. Pickens’ company, Mesa Power LLP, plans to announce today that it ordered 667 turbines from GE for about $2 billion.
That will produce 1,000 megawatts of power, more than the average nuclear power plant, and enough juice to light 300,000 homes.

Had the wind “farm” been built, and taking wind limitation into account, it would have generated about 180 megawatts of wobbly electricity hundreds of miles from the bulk of consumers. Peatlands are wetland ecosystems that accumulate plant material over time to form layers of peat soil up to 20 meters thick. They are present in 180 countries, cover 3 percent of the worlds surface, and store an average of 10 times more carbon per hectare than other ecosystems.

Clipper Windpower, the Aim-listed, US-based wind turbine manufacturer, today warned that only a handful of its turbines will contribute to this year’s earnings.
Clipper had previously said revenues from 35 of the 125 turbines produced at its plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, would be recognised in this year’s figures.
Today, however, it said commissioning delays meant only eight turbines, which were produced late in 2006, would be counted. Revenues and gross profits from the balance would be taken in 2008, the company . . .

Kyoto allows rich countries to meet greenhouse gas emissions targets between 2008 and 2012 by buying carbon offsets from developing and former communist nations, funding projects there for example to install renewable energy.

The bitter row over wind farms has reignited with the approval for 10 110-metre turbines near the Brechfa Forest.
Carmarthenshire planners granted a planning application from developer Catamount Energy to build the wind farm on land adjacent to Blaengwen Farm, near Alltwalis, Pencader.
The news was met with dismay by protesters who fear it will open the door to further applications around the forest.
A new group called Blaengwen Development Objectors is investigating legal options to reverse the decision.

Wind power company Airtricity is preparing to raise €500 million in fresh capital through a fundraising which could be completed by the summer.
The company wants to use the money to fund its growing international portfolio of projects and is likely to meet its target of between €400 million and €500 million in fresh capital without difficulty, according to market sources.
When complete, Airtricity will have raised just over €1 billion in the last five years to fund its wind farm expansion . . .

A government inspector granted permission for the turbines on appeal following a public inquiry last year but a condition imposed to prevent noise nuisance was challenged by Nicholas and Lee Hoare who live next to the proposed site.

A company bidding to build a wind farm on land owned by businessman Mohamed Al Fayed has appealed against a council’s decision to refuse it permission.
Airtricity proposed to construct 23 turbines at Beinn Rosail, near Invercassley, in Sutherland.
It has lodged an appeal with the Scottish Executive against Highland Council’s decision in December.
Airtricity said its plan was in line with the development policies of the council and government.

Some residents have a different perspective.
