Wind farm equipment for NewWind Ltd. is being trucked from Bull Arm over two to three weeks with police escorts. Two large pieces — tower and nacelle — entered St. Lawrence recently, both a welcome sight for residents. The transportation of the equipment is a major undertaking, with some of the units weighing up to 77 tonnes each.
The first delivery didn’t go without incident. One of the flatbeds carrying a tower segment bowed enough . . .

An aboriginal-owned company is looking at developing a 30-megawatt wind farm on 225 acres of land it has acquired in Port au Port West. However, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has yet to decide whether they’ll even be moving ahead with another wind project in the near future.

STEPHENVILLE — The development of a 30-megawatt wind farm by an aboriginal-owned company on 225 acres of land in Port au Port West could be a long way from becoming a reality.
That’s because Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has yet to decide whether they’ll be moving ahead with another wind project in the near future.
The recently formed Mi’kmaq Resources Corporation briefed the Bay. St. George Chamber of Commerce on their plans at a recent meeting.

Town Clerk Marion Evoy said the town’s development regulations need to be amended before the practice of wind farming is allowed, so the town has scheduled a meeting for Thursday at 7 p.m.

The 27-megawatt wind farm will be built near the Southern Shore community of Fermeuse last year.
However, Vector Wind Energy — which signed an agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro in 2006 — was then bought by Canadian Hydro Developers, which in turn sold the project to SkyPower Corp.

Dr. Tariq Iqbal, associate professor with Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, has been working on renewable energy systems for coastal Labrador. Last year, he completed a study in Battle Harbour, which demonstrated that a wind hybrid system could reduce diesel consumption from 30,000 litres per year to 13,000 litres resulting in a 57 per cent . . .

Be that as it may, it hasn’t stopped protest groups from cropping up around the world to decry the pitfalls of wind energy development, the ones they say you won’t find in any carefully crafted political media materials.
And those groups are warning Newfoundland and Labrador to tread ever-so-carefully into the wind-energy business, . . .

The report, obtained by CBC News, says the island’s electrical grid will limit the size and potential of wind farm projects, despite a “world-class wind resource” waiting to be tapped.
The report — completed in 2005 by Ontario consulting firm Acres International — says Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro should develop a plan to . . .
