The economics of wind power will determine if it is viable and cost effective. Mandating or subsidizing a marginal player in the power industry will, in the long run, be costly.
Wind power’s chief drawback is obvious: The wind doesn’t blow constantly. A too-heavy reliance on wind generators risks brownouts and blackouts. No industry or household will put up with part-time . . .

Discussion to center on benefits, drawbacks of wind turbines
An increased interest in wind energy has inspired Ottawa County to host a wind-energy symposium within the next 45 days, officials said.
The one-day event will bring in industry experts and individuals familiar with wind-energy regulations, said Mark Knudsen, director of the Ottawa County Planning and Grants Department.
Knudsen said his department will be teaming up with the Michigan State University Extension of Ottawa County for the symposium.
The discussion will revolve around the benefits . . .

Russ Lundberg, Huron County Building and Zoning director, said Julie Harker-Leigh, Noble Environmental Power Community Outreach director, told Huron County Planning Commissioners Wednesday Noble has contracted with Alliant Energy EPC, LLC to design and construct the company’s wind park. It will be located in Bingham and Sheridan townships.

The shape of a Lenawee County-funded wind energy study is changing and some county commissioners asked last week to refresh a vote authorizing money for the update plan.
“We kind of backed up,” said John Tuckerman, R-Blissfield, in reporting to the commission last week on the wind study the commission voted in December to help fund with a $20,000 allocation. Tuckerman serves on the county’s

A handful of townships in Michigan have ordinances that specifically address turbines, but few cities have followed suit.
Officials in the city’s community development office are studying the issue as residents become interested in using alternative energy sources.
The climate in shoreline communities like Norton Shores, Muskegon and Grand Haven is ideal for turbines, officials said.

The Michigan Senate today passed a bill that would require all state buildings to meet a series of renewable energy requirements over the next 17 years.
The legislation, which now goes to the House for consideration, would mandate that the state’s facilities get 10 percent of their electricity from so-called “green” or alternative sources–such as wind power–by 2010. The amount of required renewable energy gradually would rise to 25 percent by 2025.
The Republican-led Senate prefers such an approach to broader requirements, . . .

Currently, the state has three wind farms operating — in the Thumb, in Mackinaw City and in Traverse City — with a 32-unit wind farm under construction in the Thumb.
