The Swedish government has announced plans for the construction of 2,000 wind turbines over the next ten years, writes enterprise minister Maud Olofsson in an opinion article in Dagens Nyheter on Tuesday.
The goal is to increase electricity production from renewable energy sources by 25 terawatt hours by 2020. This can be compared with a total electricity production from Swedish nuclear power in 2009 of around 50 terawatt hours.
Olofsson explained that the expansion of renewable energy production will be stimulated by . . .

The Sami community in northern Sweden demands shares of wind power profits as compensation for damages inflicted on their their area by wind power production.
One of the largest wind power fields in the world will soon be located in the Swedish Sami settlements of East Kikkejaurs in Piteå municipality. Up to a 1000 wind turbines are estimated to produce power for about two million households. Germany-based Svevind is behind the plans. The area is home to Sami reindeer herding communities . . .

Finnish utility Fortum said it is planning a 50-50 wind farm joint venture with Orsa Besparingsskog, a land and forest cooperative in Sweden.
The venture would spend between 22-33 mln eur on up to eight 2-3 megawatt wind power plants in the Orsa Finnmark area of the province of Dalarna in central Sweden.
Fortum said the investment would be part of a long-term plan to raise its ‘environmentally-benign’ power generation capacity.
Most of the 7 bln eur Fortum has spent on CO2-free capacity . . .

The European Union’s current goal is to increase the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources by up to 22% by 2010. In line with European objectives, in 2002 the Swedish government adopted a national planning goal of yearly electricity production from wind power of 10 TWh by 2015, which implied a substantial increase from the 0.851 TWh level of 2005. In spite of these policy goals and measures, wind power has achieved considerably more modest results in Sweden . . .

Two companies are fighting for the right to build wind turbines at Blaikfjället in northern Sweden. Skelleftekraft and Svevind each want to built around 120 turbines.
“Blaikfjället is very well suited to wind turbines. There is already a connection to the national electricity grid from Juktan power station, and the wind conditions are also favourable,” Mikael Kyrk from Svevind told Västerbottens-Kuriren.
“But there is not enough room for two projects at the same time.
“It might be possible to coordinate the projects but . . .
