Group urges city to rexamine wind turbine project

A group of Saskatoon residents urged city councillors to put the brakes on a controversial wind turbine project when they appeared before council Monday night. The city is moving ahead with a request for proposals to build the project at the city’s landfill, but residents of the nearby Montgomery neighbourhood say it would create noise, and decrease property values. They also argue the project will have environmental and health effects. The Saskatoon Wind Turbine Coalition presented a petition with more . . .

Wind coalition packs chambers

A group of residents urged Saskatoon city council Monday to stop the construction of a wind turbine atop the Saskatoon landfill. The Saskatoon Wind Turbine Coalition opposes the project, which was approved by council in October. About $500,000 has been spent on the turbine project thus far. The group packed into council chambers as three speakers outlined their concerns at the beginning of the night. “What the City of Saskatoon has before it is an error,” said Chris Fossenier, a . . .

Marginal benefit

City council was mistaken to approve proceeding with a $5 million tall wind turbine at the landfill. It showed no interest in the comments made by Coun. Pat Lorje and had no empathy for Montgomery residents. Lorje was correct to say, “Council made a decision on a wing and a prayer while saluting the green flag.” The wind power classification chart lists wind resources potential as: marginal; fair; good; excellent; outstanding; and superb. Wind turbine coalition post ‘wind vigilance’ reports

The group fighting to stop Saskatoon’s landfill wind turbine, a project being actively bid on by companies, has a website. They are also sending out media releases and requesting meetings with each councillor. Today, the group posted a response from The Society for Wind Vigilance to two reports. One of the responses is to the Ontario chief medical officer of health, Arlene King, who concluded in a report in 2010 that wind turbines cause “no adverse health effects.” Our latest story is here, wherein Saskatoon Light and Power’s Kevin . . .

Turbine continues to stir up opposition

A group of Montgomery Place residents are confident they can stop the city from building a wind turbine near their Saskatoon neighbourhood. The Saskatoon Wind Turbine Coalition, which is opposed to the construction of a wind turbine atop the Saskatoon landfill in the city’s southwest end, held a forum with about 100 people Wednesday night to discuss the potential adverse health effects of turbines. “We feel the mayor and city council were not informed when the decision was made to . . .

Show the reports

Recently Saskatoon’s council approved the construction of a $5-million Saskatoon wind turbine on top of the landfill. On its website, the City of Saskatoon makes reference to “four feasibility and assessment reports” with respect to the turbine. These studies analyze the noise created, the soil conditions for construction, wind speed and impact on birds and bats. There is no “report” listed on the economics of the project. In its conclusion, the report on wind speed states that “The site, therefore, . . .

Montgomery shoots the breeze on Saskatoon turbines

Montgomery neighbourhood residents in Saskatoon have rallied against the city’s wind turbine project for a landfill in their area, and have begun circulating a petition. Resident Chris Fossenier doesn’t think it makes sense. “Why are we building the turbine 780 metres from people when places like the state of Victoria and Australia said that they won’t build them within five kilometres of a city,” he said. “They’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.” Mayor Don Atchison . . .

Turbine project handled poorly

The city announced a couple of years ago that it was exploring the idea of a tall wind turbine in Saskatoon. I loved the idea when it came out and have followed its progress off and on. The city evaluated sites near the university, Diefenbaker Park and the landfill. Eventually the choice was narrowed down to the landfill site, where a variety of green energy options will be located. The tall wind turbine that Saskatoon is proposing is one of . . .
