The consortium is providing the long-term finance for the construction of a 57-megawatt (MW) stand-alone wind energy site, which will be the largest ever such site built in Ireland.
The capital is coming from a private equity group led by Ulster Bank, made up of a syndicate of domestic and foreign lenders. The investment was put together over the past . . .

This 120MW windfarm consists of 60 turbines, 90 metres (295 feet) high. According to Mr Smyth, it has been located 23km offshore “to minimise the impact on people living in coastal communities”. The fact that much of the coastal zone in Netherlands is designated for wildlife protection doubtless also influenced this location.

However, unlike the devastating landslide on August 22 that turned the Rivers Feale and Smearlagh into . . .

State-owned energy company Bord na Móna plans to invest €1.4 billion in expanding and moving the group away from its traditional activities over the next five years.
The company will stop exploiting peat bogs, the purpose for which it was founded in 1946, over the next two decades, and refocus its business on a mix of energy, waste-management and recovery, and horticulture.
Recently-appointed chief executive Gabriel D’Arcy said yesterday that Bord na Móna would spend €1.2 billion on building up its energy . . .

Scotland and Ireland are to work together to harness the power of the wind, the waves and tides between the two countries from Cork to Kintyre.
A feasibility study into offshore renewable energy projects, and how the power they generate could be transmitted to the respective national grids, is to be conducted by the Scottish Government in partnership with the Irish government and the Northern Ireland Executive.
It was announced yesterday that the appropriately titled Isles project (Irish-Scottish Links on Energy Study) . . .

The government could be forced to amend planning laws following a landmark ruling by Europe’s highest court that found its existing rules fail to protect the environment.
The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg yesterday found that weak Irish planning legislation was responsible for the major landslide at Derrybrien, Co Galway, in 2003 that killed 50,000 fish and badly scarred a peat landscape.
It also ruled that a failure to mandate environmental impact assessments before projects begin and a commonly used planning . . .

The European Court of Justice has ruled against Ireland in a case involving a wind farm project in Co Galway where a landslide killed 50,000 fish in 2003.
The court said that a proper environmental impact assessment should have been carried out before the project proceeded.
This ruling relates to the Derrybrien windfarm project, the biggest ever windfarm in Ireland at the time and one of the largest in Europe.
Today’s ruling will have major implications for the way the Government has allowed . . .
