Tybee Island — The wind gusted to 25 mph at the far end of this beach town’s famous pier. A dozen kite surfers below skimmed across the foam-flecked ocean. Shirtless and sunburned fishermen praised the cooling powers of the southerly breezes.
The wind proved a recreational godsend. Could it also prove a commercial success?
Georgia Tech researchers, who recently completed a study on wind energy off Tybee and Jekyll islands, think so. Southern Co., which commissioned the report, will further study whether . . .

As the prospects for wind energy in Georgia improve, a wind advocacy group breezed into Savannah on Wednesday with meetings at the Metropolitan Planning Commission and at Oatland Island Wildlife Center.
“We’re doing this to get out there and do early education,” said Paul Wolff, a member of the Georgia Wind Working Group and also a member of the Tybee Island City Council. “We’re anticipating local planners will get requests for wind turbines.”
The requests are expected in part because a new . . .

At a point beginning three nautical miles from the U.S. coastline and extending 200 nautical miles seaward lie the vast, federally-controlled waters of the outer continental shelf. There the winds and waves are consistent, the currents strong, and the human activities minimal: conditions ideal for marine renewable energy projects.
Federal laws limit the leasing of the outer continental shelf for energy harvesting almost entirely to oil and gas explorers. Or at least until now. A federal agency in April announced 16 . . .

Southern Company said on Wednesday that a thorough two-year study conducted with the Georgia Institute of Technology has identified several conditions potentially favorable for wind power generation off the coast of Georgia, but that high costs and regulatory issues still need to be resolved.
Launched in 2005, the joint study examined in detail a variety of factors — including wind resources, technology, siting, environmental, weather conditions, permitting and economics — associated with sites off Georgia’s coast.
In conclusion, the study recommended that . . .

Don’t hold your breath waiting for wind power off the Georgia coast.
Georgia Tech and Southern Co. have been looking into a possible wind project, but increasing costs for the turbines along with a stalled regulatory process make it an unlikely prospect for the near future, said William Bulpitt, senior research engineer with Georgia Tech’s Strategic Energy Initiative.
“The main stumbling block is economics,” he said. “The price of steel and copper have gone up dramatically.”
Also driving up the cost of offshore . . .

The yearlong data collection is finished in a wind-power viability study in Floyd County, but analysis of the results will take several weeks.
Green Power EMC, a joint effort by 17 of the state’s electric cooperatives, set up an assessment tower in summer 2005 atop Oglethorpe Power’s Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant, off Big Texas Valley Road.
The 200-foot tower — a pole with wind-measuring equipment, a thermometer and other recording devices — recently finished collecting data . . .
