German wind power company WPD said in a statement Friday it would build erect wind turbines in Finland in cooperation with Metsähallitus, a Finnish state-owned enterprise.
WPD did not disclose the value of the investment.
The wind farm, with a total generating capacity of upwards of 30 megawatts, is to be built in Muonio in Finnish Lapland. Construction is to begin in 2011 at the earliest.

Government has agreed to construct a number of wind power plants over the next decade. Information obtained by YLE indicates that the aim is to generate about 2000 megawatts of wind power by the year 2020. In principle about 1,000 wind turbines would be needed to produce that much power.
The proposal calls for development of wind parks in key catchment areas such as coastlines and near the sea, to accommodate the large numbers of turbines needed. The proposal is . . .

The government’s plan to sharply increase the use of wind power has been questioned by the national electric grid operator Fingrid.
The company says that heavy investments would be needed before the grid could handle a large injection of wind power. Large subsidies would also be needed. These are part of the government’s energy package, one of the hot topics on the agenda of Parliament’s autumn session, which begins on Tuesday.
Fingrid argues that expanding wind power would be too . . .

In the Finnish context the project, comprising up to 162 turbines, is gargantuan given that the country’s current wind power generating capacity is all of 130 megawatts.

Fortum said the new wind farms could begin to generate electricity in 2014-2016.

A feed-in tariff could, according to a study commissioned by the ministry, pay for the construction of about 2,000 megawatts of new wind power generating capacity.
Electricity generated by wind power stations is considerably more expensive than the current market price of power.
Under a feed-in tariff scheme, the government fixes an above-market price . . .
