Ohio could pit cogeneration against wind farms

We made an error of omission in last week’s regional round-up of RPS legislation, leaving out a significant bill that’s working its way through the Ohio legislature. Ohio’s Senate is expected to begin testimony next week on SB 315, which, among other things, would change the definition of renewable energy to include combined-heat-and-power, or cogeneration, projects. Cogeneration can create big energy savings by simultaneously generating electricity, mechanical power or thermal energy. A 2008 report by the U.S. Department of Energy’s . . .

An ill wind at the ballpark

I attended the Cleveland Indian’s opener and found a few things more disturbing than the heartbreaking loss. First, I find an even newer logo to (try) to replace our beloved Chief Wahoo — a block letter “C,” more fitting for the Cincinnati Reds or Colorado Rockies. As if that stylized “I” that looks more like a “J” wasn’t bad enough. Then, I see this white monstrosity towering over the right field seating: a wind power generating contraption. Let me get . . .

Kalida wind turbine issue may go to the voters

Kalida and Union Township residents filled the village council chambers Monday night to voice their opinion on the wind turbine project proposed by KMI, Inc. (Kalida Manufacturing Inc.). The company is proposing the installation of two turbines on 52 acres of land they want to purchase adjacent to their existing plant. “In my nine years as mayor we have more people here than I have had in the previous 200 meetings before this,” said Mayor Alan Gerdeman. “This shows a . . .

No jurisdiction: Wapak reviews alternative energy regulations

Wapakoneta city officials plan to continue to refine rules regarding wind turbines and solar panels within the city limits in the next few months, but they have no plans to take a new stance on a proposed wind farm north of the city. During Monday’s Wapakoneta City Council meeting, 2nd Ward Councilor Dan Lee updated his fellow councilors on progress made by the committee he chairs regarding zoning and building codes for wind turbines and solar energy in the city. . . .

Kalida considers putting wind turbine issue up for vote

KALIDA — After a first reading on a rewritten zoning ordinance to allow wind turbines in industrial areas of Kalida failed, the consensus of Village Council members was to consider putting the contentious issue up for special election. More than 100 residents filled the council chambers Monday night, the majority against the proposed installation of two wind turbines by Kalida Manufacturing Industries on land they would like annexed into the village. Union township resident Don Selhorst and Kalida resident Dan . . .

Dover considers wind power agreement

Is wind-generated electrical power in Dover’s future? It will be if City Council approves the administration’s recommendation to enter into a purchase power agreement for electricity from the Blue Creek Wind Farm in Van Wert. Pam Sullivan, vice president of American Municipal Power, of which Dover is a member, Monday night told council members that AMP entered into a purchase agreement with Blue Creek Wind Farm LLC on Feb. 27. Sullivan said AMP’s contract is for 10 years, with power . . .

Wind turbines wrong for Kalida, area

Progress, some say. Since when is it progress to jeopardize people’s health and well being, not to mention their rights and property? I am not against the progress to use wind turbines for energy. I am against the proposed location of these wind giants at KMI in Kalida. They should be placed in an isolated area miles from any residence. Wind turbines have their place, and Kalida is not it. This proposed location is way too close to many people’s . . .

Concerns raised about wind turbines near Kalida

KALIDA — Health concerns, flickering and property values are all issues on the minds of residents in light of a proposal by Kalida Manufacturing Industries to install two windmills. KMI plant manager Rick Esch said KMI is proposing purchasing the land to install two company-owned 1.5-megawatt wind turbine generators that would provide about two-thirds of the company’s annual electric power. He said the project would allow the company to offset a projected 20-year average of $1.6 million in costs. KMI . . .

Kalida residents opposed to wind turbine proposal

KALIDA — Plans by Kalida Manufacturing to build two wind turbines adjacent to its facility met with strong opposition Tuesday night. During a Union Township trustees meeting Tuesday evening, more than 60 area residents expressed their strong vocal opposition to KMI’s plans to purchase 55 acres adjacent to their property and install two wind towers on the property. KMI plant manager Rick Esch said KMI is proposing purchasing the land to install two company-owned 1.5 megawatt wind turbine generators that . . .
