The Madaket wind turbine project was the talk of Nantucket for months, but the proposal was overwhelmingly rejected by voters Saturday at the 2012 Annual Town Meeting.
The controversial effort to build a 325-foot wind turbine at the Madaket landfill had seemed to divide the island, with government officials, friends and neighbors on opposite sides of the debate.
Yet in the end, the turbine proposal didn’t come close to being approved, with 463 voters raising their hands to oppose funding for the project, and just 282 people voting in favor.
The 2012 Annual Town Meeting went all day Saturday at Nantucket High School, and will reconvene Monday night to finish business on the remaining warrant articles.
