Over 200 sign up against turbines

Credit:  By Jane Candlish, The Press and Journal, www.pressandjournal.co.uk 18 February 2012 ~~

More than 200 people have signed a petition against a windfarm south of Inverness.

West Coast Energy wants to build 13 turbines on hills above the village of Daviot.

If approved the scheme would be the closest yet to the Highland capital.

The plans have attracted considerable criticism, particularly over the company’s proposals to give money to the University of the Highlands and Islands and Inverness College. The deal would earn the two organisations a total of £3.25million over 25 years, to be used towards educational initiatives.

Anti-windfarm campaigners have canvassed the 137 properties which lie within two-and-a-half miles of the proposed turbines. A total of 244 people signed a petition opposing the development.

Spokesman for the protesters, Tony Kell, said residents in 37 properties declined to sign and the results were consistent with a previous survey which indicated that more than 80% of people in the area were against the development.

The local community council is also objecting to the windfarm. Highlands and Islands Airports is seeking more information about the precise location of each turbine.
