Worker injured at new wind farm site

NORWAY — A worker helping to disassemble crane components sustained a leg injury Tuesday in Norway, P.E.I. when he was struck by a block of wood.

West Prince RCMP officer Const. Dwayne Pardy said the incident occurred as the crane was moving forward.

The crane’s track caught the edge of a block of wood and shot it forward, striking the crewmember on the lower leg, Pardy reported. He estimated the block to be six inches by 12 inches by four feet in length.

Tignish Fire Department provided assistance on scene until Island EMS paramedics arrived.

The worker was subsequently transported to hospital by Island EMS. No information has been provided on the extent of his injuries.

An Occupational Health and Safety spokesman confirmed the incident is under investigation but could not provide further details.

Pardy said workers were in the process of disassembling the crane, which had been used to erect components for the Wind Energy Institute of Canada’s new wind farm in Norway, near the corner of the Norway and Nelligan Roads.
