Vote Tuesday on Galloo Island payment

Jefferson County has become a popular place for developers planning wind farms. The problem is not everyone is on board with the plans. Brian Dwyer spent the day with one group that’s gaining momentum in the fight against wind towers on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. — A big vote is set in Jefferson County Tuesday night as lawmakers decide whether or not to approve a payment in lieu of taxes deal for a proposed wind farm on Galloo Island.
Not everyone thinks it would be a good deal. The Coalition for the Preservation of the Golden Crescent hopes that plan is turned down. The group is made up of professionals, residents and organizations along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. They believe a wind farm would destroy Galloo Island’s beautiful scenery and they say that’s something the area can’t afford.
“The goal is to take time to review this and have a dialogue across all the Golden Crescent and Thousand Island regions. We want to find out how we can make a better deal for our labor force and how we can make a better deal for any businesses that we’re going to force into a transition away from fishing and tourism,” said Karl Williams of the Coalition of the Preservation of the Golden Crescent.
The group will be at the county meeting Tuesday and is hoping for a good turnout.
