Residents needed to consider tower issues
Tremont — Questions surrounding the construction of wireless communication and wind power towers has become paramount over the past year.
Now, Tremont residents can get in on the ground floor when it comes to the control of tower development.
In October, the Planning Board began looking at tower ordinances that are in place in other towns, with an eye toward getting an ordinance drawn up for Tremont. The board voted to ask the selectmen to appoint the Zoning Ordinance Advisory Committee to do an initial review of the ordinances, in a team effort with the planning board.
Selectmen are now looking for members for the ZOAC.
The Planning Board had invited the ZOAC to their Dec. 15 meeting, but only a couple of ZOAC members showed up to express interest in continuing on the committee.
And two members resigned. This week selectmen accepted the resignation of Mary Beth Judy from the ZOAC. Town Manager Millard Billings said that Scott Grierson had also verbally tendered his resignation, but Billings recommended that he should try to get the statement in writing before the board accepts it.
The board appointed Maynard Young, who has previously served on the ZOAC and expressed interest in serving again, to a three-year term on ZOAC.
Four more people are needed for the seven-member committee.
Selectmen authorized Billings to advertise for ZOAC members.
Usually, Billings said, folks don’t get involved in the drafting of ordinances until the hearing stage, or even the town meeting stage, when nothing can be done except to vote a proposal up or down.
“This is a good chance to get into it at the beginning,” he said.
In other business, selectmen appointed David Campbell to a five-year term on the Cemetery Committee. One more member is needed for that committee.
They appointed Christina Baker and Mary Jones to three-year terms on the Recreation Board, which has unlimited membership.
“The more the merrier from that crowd,” said Chris Eaton.
Selectmen approved the Bass Harbor Memorial Library board of trustees’ request to change the bylaws so that a vice chairman can be added to their officers.
Billings told selectmen that he received a bill from Cadillac Builders for $9,886 for six change orders related to the construction of the Seal Cove Fishway. Billings said he forwarded the bill to Roland Dupuis at the Natural Resources Conservation Service, which oversaw the project. Selectmen said they would take no action on the bill until they hear back from Dupuis as to whether all the orders had been okayed.
