Eco Awareness Society is disappointed by response

Pictou County’s Eco Awareness Society has received a response from Nova Scotia Environment (NSE) more than seven months after initiating an investigation alleging five counts of false and misleading statements and extensive plagiarism in the health section of Shear Wind’s environmental assessment documents.

Shear Wind is in the process of establishing a wind farm in the eastern part of the county.

The letter said “…it has been concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support a charge in this matter and, should a charge be laid, there would be a very low prospect of conviction.”

EAS vice-president Eileen MacKinnon said in a release the response was disappointing.

“NSE failed to provide a decision as to whether or not the statements were false and misleading or whether there was significant plagiarism and literary fraud, thereby allowing this information to remain on the NSE web site, where it continues to misrepresent the adverse health and safety effects of this project,” she said.

EAS is concerned about the affect NSE’s decision will have on credible monitoring and compliance of this project.

“NSE has committed grave injustices, which will have a lasting and negative impact on the community surrounding Shear Wind’s proposed wind power plant,” said MacKinnon.

“Unfortunately, for all in Nova Scotia who face industrial wind power plants, we have come to a point where there is no penalty for deception in the environmental assessment process,” she added.
