Officials to discuss future of wind energy in Lorain County
ELYRIA — Lorain County officials will learn more about the future of alternative energy in northern Ohio.
The Lorain County Growth Partnership today will host leaders of the Great Lakes Energy Development Task Force to explain a study that examined the feasibility of using offshore wind turbines. The task force also plans to install a 20-megawatt wind turbine in Lake Erie.
Offshore wind turbine development could bring more than $1 billion in investments to Northeast Ohio, keeping and creating jobs in new power development.
Today’s speakers include Richard T. Stuebi, a founding member of the advanced energy initiative of NorTech. He works there on loan from the Cleveland Foundation, where he is fellow of energy and environmental advancement. He is also managing director of Early Stage Partners, a Cleveland venture capital firm.
Stuebi will discuss the current state of international wind energy development. Although there are no offshore wind turbines installed in the United States, Europe now has more than 1,470 megawatts of offshore wind energy capacity with plans to install turbines to create another 100,000 megawatts.
Task force Executive Director Steven Dever also will discuss the wind turbine in Lake Erie, a plan known as the Initial Commercialization Project.
Lorain County Commissioner Ted Kalo also will discuss the benefits the county could see with an increase of onshore and offshore wind turbine development. Six companies in Lorain County currently manufacture components for turbines and more than a dozen are pursuing business in that industry.
