La Veta tries to calm rush of wind power plans

LA VETA, Colo. (AP) — One south-central Colorado community is trying to calm the rush of proposals to build wind farms in the area.

The La Veta Town Council opposes the planned 7,000-acre Silver Mountain wind farm two miles from town. Two other wind facilities have been proposed in the area.

La Veta, about 160 miles south of Denver, wants a moratorium on wind projects until Huerfano County updates its planning and regulations. Opponents worry about the effects on the area’s countryside, which makes it a tourist destination and real-estate draw.

The Silver Mountain wind farm is proposed next to a county-desigated scenic corridor. Developer Renewable Energy Systems Inc. says it picked the site because the area’s wind resource is rated as outstanding.
