New turbine plan for Eye

Plans for three wind turbines near Eye airfield have been outlined, with a field off the A140 between the town and Yaxley picked out.

The scoping report, which contains preliminary details on the plans, includes a proposal for a community fund which would receive a grant of about £10,000 per year from Wind Power Renewables (WPR).

The proposals mean the airfield could face large development, with consultations for two other wind turbines and a chicken factory ongoing, as well as an incinerator being discussed.

A statement from WPR said the 130-metre high turbines, about a mile from Eye, would make “a significant and important contribution” to UK climate change targets.

Approximately 5,400 homes could be run on the power generated by the turbines.

The community fund would receive the estimated £10,000 annual grant, depending on the amount of electricity generated at the site.

Residents could then pick projects for the funds.

Eye Town Council is planning to hold a public discussion about the plans for both turbine sites.

Margaret Thomas, who lives in Brome, said: “If it was doing the community some good it would be okay.

“We chose to live here and if it wasn’t too close it wouldn’t affect the view.”

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I wouldn’t mind if they were going to be quite far away but I wouldn’t want them looming over my garden.

“The only thing is when you come to sell your house, it can take a bit of the value off.”

The plans will be available to view at Eye Town Hall on December 2, 7pm.

Eye Town Council’s planning committee chairman Merlin Carr called for residents to attend the meetings and give their views there or to the town clerk, 01379 870061.
