Fears over turbines in Lakeland

Campaigners fear that tourism in the Lake District is in danger of being blown away by the rising number of wind farms in the region.

David Maclean, Tory MP for Penrith and the Border, said the drive for green energy was destroying the natural beauty of the area, which attracts 15 million visitors a year.

Figures show that 56 wind farms on the fringe of the National Park are operational or currently involved in the planning process.

Mr Maclean said: “The applicants know that the turbines cannot get inside the park but some of them are half a mile outside, with wind turbine pylons 400ft tall.

“The power they generate is minuscule but the damage that they can do 24/7 to our visual landscape is immense.”

Campaign group the Friends of Eden, Lakeland and Lunesdale Scenery described the swathe of turbines being built as a “betrayal of our national and natural heritage”.
