Alberta power operator pushes forward $1-billion wind power line

CALGARY — The provincial electricity grid operator took a first regulatory step Friday to promote a $1-billion power line connecting wind farms in east central Alberta with industrial and residential consumers.

The 240-kilovolt Hanna line would “provide a transmission highway” to wind farms throughout east central Alberta onto the provincial transmission grid, and supply power to pipelines being developed in the area, the Alberta Electric System Operator said in a press release.

The electricity watchdog filed a needs document for the line with the Alberta Utilities Commission as part of its controversial $14.5-billion, 10-year growth plan. Routing of the proposed line has yet to be set or approved.

If approved, the project will be developed between 2012 and 2017, the AESO said.
