Balloon marks the spot say campaigners
A huge balloon was launched 426 foot up over a string of Stafford villages to show residents the height of six proposed wind turbines in the area.
The balloon, or “blimp”, was released on Monday on Birchmoor Lane near to the Bradford Estate in Brineton — the site earmarked for the wind farm.
Campaigner Tony Lendon said the blimp had been seen for miles around and he had had numerous calls from residents following the stunt.
He said: “The blimp was six metres long, whereas a single wind turbine blade is 92 metres — but it gave people an idea of how big these turbines are. I had a lot of phone calls from people who had not been in touch before so it was a very worthwhile exercise and generated more support for the campaign.”
On Monday, more than 100 people attended Church Eaton Parish Council to question representatives from Wind Prospect, the applicants.
Mr Lendon said: “Most of the questions we asked them they said they couldn’t answer until the plans were submitted. We did find out that Wind Prospect is 70 per cent French owned and most of the electricity generated will go back to France.”
Tonight, STAG (Stop Turbines Actions Group) are due to meet with VORTEX, the campaign group who successfully fought against plans for a wind farm near Market Drayton.
On Monday, an open meeting is being held at the Red Lion pub in Great Chatwell at 7pm to update residents on the latest news.
