Deputy Mayor to recommend wind farm plans

The deputy Mayor of Kiama, Ben Van der Wijngaart, says he will recommend the Southern Councils Group take the next step towards the establishment of a community-based wind farm on the New South Wales south coast.

Councillor Van der Wijngaart, who is also a member of a working party of the Southern Councils Group, has been researching the viability of using wind as an alternative energy source in the region.

He says the working party has received positive feedback about the idea from a number of politicians and operators of community wind farms in Victoria.

Cr Van der Wijngaart says the working party will ask the Southern Councils Group to endorse a pre-feasibility study when it reports back in July.

“That will require an investment of some money to in fact do a degree of land mapping, wind mapping, do some environmental impact statements, start looking at power purchase agreements and initial contracts with landowners,” he said.
