Sainte-Luce — Les citoyens limitent l'implantation d'éoliennes

[Sainte-Luce: Citizens limit construction of wind turbines; scroll down for English translation]

The voters of Sainte-Luce, near Rimouski, chose to limit the development of wind energy in their village.

Called to decide by referendum today, they narrowly endorsed the municipal regulation that prohibits all wind energy development within a limit of 5 km [3.1 mi] from the St. Lawrence River.

Just over 52 percent of the voters endorsed the rule.

The turnout was determined to be about 41 percent.

Several weeks ago, Kruger Energy put on hold its plan for a park of 34 wind turbines costing $200 millioin. Its contract with Hydro-Québec still remains open.

Two groups of citizens, the Comité de vigilance éolienne de Sainte-Luce [Sainte-Luce Wind Watch], who supported the adoption of the rule, and the Regroupement favorisant l’acceptabilité sociale [Group in Favor of Social Acceptability], who opposed it, were faced off.
