Nuttby turbine project proceeding
TRURO – Nova Scotia Power representatives indicate the Nuttby Mountain windmill farm project is gradually picking up speed.
“Plans are ongoing … but we believe the target to start is 2011 and that is reasonable. The sooner the better though,” said NSP representative Pam McKinnon of the $95 to $110-million project.
One aspect being worked on now is “it will take about six to eight weeks” to secure some turbine equipment, including blades, for the 22 turbines that will each offer up to 45 megawatts.
During Thursday night’s Colchester County council meeting, NSP listened to the second reading of the wind turbine bylaw council is working on. Some of the specifics include placing the turbines at 700 metres separation distance to nearby dwellings or 500 metres of affected neighbours with written consent.
Other bylaw issues being addressed by council in the bylaw readings are lighting, outdoor storage, enforcement and offence of bylaw, to name only a few.
In addition, McKinnon said a federal assessment on current windmill projects has been completed and a provincial assessment is underway.
“By 2013, 10 per cent of energy should be in the form of renewal energy … that’s the goal,” said McKinnon.
