Wind energy generators say grid connection on hold

Bulgaria’s power utilities are shutting out installed wind power capacities, saying they could not be plugged in without the nod of the national grid operator NEK, according to Velizar Kiryakov, chairman of the local clean energy association.

Bulgarian legislation stipulates that the power company and the distributors have two months to answer the request, with grid-connection due to take place no later than three months before the plant goes live.

Kiryakov said wind energy generators installed in the northern Black Sea region of Varna last year have not been hooked yet. The area is serviced by E.ON Bulgaria.

CEZ Bulgaria, which supplies power to the Sofia region and Pleven, believes grid-connection deadlines should be extended to allow companies to carefully study the economic case of the investment.

The Electricity System Operator (ESO), which operates the transmission grid, said there is 9000 mWh of new capacity in the pipeline and a parallel grid should be constructed to handle it all.

Many of the projects announced will never be fulfilled and real investors should be sifted out from bogus investors.

The power firm proposed that investors should secure bank guarantees before they announce projects, an idea that has won the thumbs-up of the renewable energy association.
