Community outrage at wind farm plan

This letter tries to address Robert Fellows’ comments (November 18) about the “Community Roadshow” held in Glyncorrwg, concerning a proposed wind farm by Gamesa.

Following the pre-application consultations in late 2006, we were told by e-mail from Mr Fellows on March 26, 2007 that the residents of Glyncorrwg would be consulted on any new proposal for a wind farm.

It states: “As you are aware, we are still working on the draft proposal for the Llynfi Renewable Energy Park and further meetings and consultation will take place with local stakeholders and residents after this process has been completed.”

Therefore, we assumed that the Community Roadshow held on September 26, 2008 was this promised consultation, especially as the newsletter of invitation spent three pages detailing the revised proposal.

It appears that this promised consultation has not yet happened and we note that Mr Fellows fails to mention when it will take place.

We are not opposed to renewable energy and we do have a 16-turbine wind farm in our backyard at Ffynnon Oer. However, 387ft wind turbines, as near as 700m to our homes, are unacceptable.

In Scotland, turbines must by law, be placed at a distance of 2km from homes.

Why is Wales being short-changed?

The turbines are potentially dangerous as they are proposed for a mountain above houses and the local primary school.

They will ruin our landscape with maximum destruction for a minimum benefit.

We are tired of unwanted projects being dumped in the Neath Port Talbot area.

Would you like to live 700m from a 387ft turbine?

Next time you are in Cardiff, look at the giant wheel at the Winter Wonderland – these turbines will be twice as high as that wheel.

Most people in Glyncorrwg strongly oppose this proposal. We live here.

We cannot afford to pay a London-based PR company to act for us, but we shall work hard to protect the beautiful area where we live.

Gamesa, a Spanish-based firm, must not be allowed to ruin our area so that they can make even more money.
