Energy company plans wind farm exhibitions
An energy firm is hosting a public exhibition to show residents its plans for a five-turbine wind farm near Gilmorton.
Broadview Energy wants to build the turbines on land between Gilmorton, Ashby Magna and Dunton Bassett, and has already dubbed the potential development the Low Spinney Wind Farm.
The company has organised the exhibition at Gilmorton Village Hall next Wednesday, between 4 and 8pm.
Residents living in the affected villages have set up a campaign group called Against Wind Farm at Low Spinney (AWFALS).
Members of the group say they are worried about the visual impact of the wind farm as well as the noise of the turbines and the additional traffic the development would bring.
Jeff Corrigan, managing director of Broadview Energy, said: “With our other projects in others parts of the country, we have found local exhibitions to be hugely positive and a real benefit to the residents who naturally have questions about the plans.
“It gives an opportunity to people to come and learn more about the specific aspects of the scheme as well as the more reticent to learn more about the truths of the project.”
Although no formal plans have been submitted for the wind farm, Broadview Energy has been given permission to build a 60-metre tall temporary meteorological mast, which will gather data at the site.
The firm hopes to submit a full application for the turbines, which will be about 125 metres tall, about four times the height of the spire at All Saints Church in Gilmorton, in early 2009.
Each of the five turbines will be capable of generating 3 megawatts of electricity.
Chairman of AWFALS, Barry Mearns, from Ashby Magna, said: “The campaign group is still meeting regularly as the application deadline gets closer.
“We have been distributing newsletters in neighbouring villages and we also had stalls at street fairs in Dunton Bassett and Ashby Magna which people were very interested in.
“A number of group members will be visiting the exhibition on Wednesday because we have some concerns and questions to bring up.”
l Broadview Energy has set up a consultation website with details about the proposals at www.lowspinneywindfarm.co.uk. The AWFALS website can be found at www.awfals.org.uk.
