New windfarm proposal

Energy giants npower renewables have filed a planning application for another wind farm on the outskirts of Doncaster.

Countryside to the south-east of the village of Hampole and to the west of the A1(M) has been identified as a suitable site for five 125m-high wind turbines.

The wind farm, were it to be given the go-ahead, would be the second of its kind in the area after Banks Developments were granted permission from the Secretary of State last year to build four similar turbines just south of Marr.

A larger scheme on Tween Bridge Moor in Thorne also got the green light earlier this year following a public inquiry into the E.ON UK Renewables project.

The Hampole development would provide enough renewable electricity to meet the average needs of between 4,800 and 7,300 homes.

Joanna Thompson, a senior renewables developer at npower, said: “Meeting UK targets for renewable energy is a huge challenge and onshore wind farms, such as the one proposed at Hampole, are a vital part of the ongoing effort to tackle climate change.

“A public exhibition was hosted by npower renewables at Brodsworth in October 2007 to inform local people about the proposal and to discuss their views and ideas about the project.

“The response we had to our exhibition was encouraging and we feel that we have designed a wind farm that is appropriate for the area in terms of the location, number and size of the turbines.

“It is now up to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council in partnership with the relevant consultees to consider our application and make a decision about the wind farm.”

Residents in the area will receive information leaflets about the proposed scheme through their doors.
