Plans unveiled for 425ft wind farm development
Plans to install 425ft wind turbines on farmland in North Yorkshire, which could supply energy to about 6,500 homes, have been announced.
Novera Energy wants to build the wind farm, which is already attracting local opposition, close to the village of Bullamoor, about two miles from Northallerton.
The project is still at an early stage, with the company planning a two-day public consultation event later this month.
Although the exact number of turbines and their positions is yet to be finalised, Novera has produced a document giving an indication of where up to four could be sited.
The blade tips of each turbine would reach a height of more than 425ft (130m), and could theoretically be seen from as far away as Newton Aycliffe to the north, and Ripon to the south.
A planning application is expected to be submitted to Hambleton District Council later this year.
Eric Chapman, of Manor Farm, in nearby Kirby Sigston, is opposing the proposal.
Mr Chapman, who fought in vain against plans to build electricity pylons close to his farm several years ago, said: “I do not think many local people will be in favour of this plan.
“We are already surrounded by pylons, and now they want to land us with four great wind turbines.”
Mr Chapman also expressed concerns about whether the local infrastructure could support the wind farm.
He said: “Novera Energy does not say anything about how it plans to get the energy from the turbines to the sub-station, at Yafforth.
“Most nearby roads are only a single track, how are lorries carrying big turbines going to negotiate them?
“They will probably need to build a new road.”
In a preliminary information document, seen by The Northern Echo, Novera Energy said: “Our proposal is at an early stage, and we are keen to engage with the local community and invite their comments.
“These will help us progress our proposals for the site.
“A full programme of technical and environmental assessments is being conducted, and initial findings suggest the site could accommodate up to four wind turbines.
“The final site layout, including the exact number of turbines and their positions, will not be concluded until assessments and public consultations are completed later this year.”
Consultations will be held at St Thomas’ Church Hall, in Brompton, from noon to 8pm, on September 15, and from 10am to 4pm, on September 16.
