Edenderry residents up in arms over wind turbines

Residents of the Francis Street area in Edenderry are up in arms over the proposed construction of two wind turbines at the rear of their homes.

A meeting was organised last Wednesday night in Byrne’s Bar in Edenderry and over 60 people were in attendance.

Another meeting is organised for this Wednesday night.

Residents are objecting to the construction of the turbines on the grounds of noise, safety and the potential decrease in value of their properties.

They claim that the turbines register at 55 decibels at a distance of 35 metres from the towers which is roughly equivalent to the noise made by a car engine when the vehicle is idling.

Residents also claim that on completion the turbines would be within 40 metres of the nearest house.

Local representatives have also voiced their concerns over the construction of the wind turbines in a residential area.

Cllr Noel Bourke said this week that he is totally opposed to the proposal. He said that having studied the planning application file in the council offices and having seen the exact proposed location for the turbines, he said he felt strongly that the construction should not be allowed to proceed.

Cllr Bourke added that he had advised local residents to make formal submissions to the planning authority. He went on to say that he had no problem with wind turbines being erected but said that in his opinion, constructing them in the vicinity of residential or built up areas was ’simply not acceptable’.

The proposed turbines would be located at the north end of Francis Street and north west of Downshire Row and New Row in the town.

The application has been lodged by MB Solar Ltd and a decision is due from Offaly County Council by September 29.
