Wind farms protest gathers momentum
Campaigners battling against a number of wind farm proposals in the Lutterworth area are pooling their resources with other anti-wind farm groups in a bid to strengthen their opposition.
The Stop the Swinford Wind Farm Action Group (SSWFAG) hosted a series of drop-in information sessions for residents at The Chequers pub in Swinford on Tuesday evening.
About 100 people attended the event, which featured presentations and displays of various wind farm applications in the county, including an 11-turbine scheme between Swinford and Walcote and another project with an as-yet-undecided number of turbines near Gilmorton.
Representatives from campaign groups concerned with other applications were invited.
Chairman of SSWFAG, Keith Kilbane, said the meeting had been a success as the various groups had agreed to pool their resources and expertise to fight applications across south Leicestershire and into Northamptonshire.
He added: “The main issue to make people aware of is that where we are, wind farm applications will affect people in a very wide area.
“There are lots of people who are opposing the wind farm in Swinford but who aren’t necessarily involved with the campaign group and the meeting was an opportunity for them to find out more about what is going on.”
Mr Kilbane said SSWFAG has already submitted a 28,000-word document to Harborough District Council objecting to the Swinford wind farm proposals.
He added: “Other sections are at the proof reading stage and will be submitted before the objection deadline on August 31.
“We are also in the process of choosing who will be speaking at the planning meeting in October.
“They will be properly qualified speakers – it won’t be Joe Bloggs with a chip on his shoulder.”
