Elbridge wind turbines remain on fast track
Elbridge Township’s proposed zoning amendment to allow for wind turbine generators remains on the fast track with the township planning commission recommending approval last week.
The proposed amendment was scheduled to go to the county planning commission today (Thursday, Aug. 7) for comment and then to the township board for consideration at a special 6 p.m. meeting tonight.
Michigan Wind LLC in conjunction with John Deere Wind Energy is proposing the $150 million wind farm for the western side of the township on a north-south line approximately one-half mile east of 116th Avenue. The units would be owned and operated by John Deere Wind Energy.
The project would be the second for Michigan Wind LLC and John Deere. The two companies collaborated on the Harvest Wind project near Pigeon in Huron County where 32 towers were constructed in the last year. The 1.65 megawatt units have the capacity to put out nearly 53 total megawatts, which is enough electricity to power 15,000 homes. Elbridge’s proposed ordinance amendment was modeled after the one in Huron County.
The planning commission’s unanimous recommendation came after an approximately one hour public hearing that about 20 people attended. Most comments made were about wind turbine generation in general and not specifically the ordinance.
