Windmill won’t be constructed at top of Nuttby Mountain
TRURO — Fears that a scenic lookout point on the top of Nuttby Mountain would be ruined by the installation of a huge wind turbine have been laid to rest.
Clair Peers, president of Cobequid Wind Power, a development partner in the Nuttby Mountain project, confirmed Thursday afternoon that a turbine would not be constructed on the mountain’s highest point.
“The thing is with this particular high spot is it’s just not a stable enough location,” said Peers.
He did say, however, there would most likely be a windmill constructed near the peak, but was unsure exactly how close it would be.
The site has been a bone of contention for the Cobequid Eco-Trails Society which plans on building a roughly 21-kilometre trail on the mountain, which would start at Gully Lake and end on the peak, which has a commanding view of the surrounding area.
Kim McCallum sits on the governing board of the society.
He was pleased by the news the peak would be untouched, as it means another roadblock in their plans has been removed.
“If there’s not going to be one (a windmill) on that peak, we will be very happy with the project,” said McCallum.
There are some residents who don’t want the windmills installed at all, said McCallum, however, he sees them as an attractive option compared to some power-generating alternatives.
“I personally am all in favour of the project, as long as it’s not on that particular location. Other than that I wish them well,” he said.
