Cape Wind windfall costly to fishing industry
I would like to offer a suggestion regarding “In Cape Wind storm of letters two raise eyebrows,” (April 26).
I think the first letter written by state Division of Marine Fisheries director Paul Diodati regarding Cape Wind, dated Feb. 20, that recaps many of the fishing industry’s concerns, should be given more weight than the second version.
I think observation of the president of Massachusetts Fishermen’s Partnership, Ed Barrett, regarding the long arm of Deval is spot-on, as Patrick has demonstrated a propensity to change laws if necessary to help his friends overcome obstacles.
Deval raised eyebrows when he recommended changes to Chapter 91 to accommodate Cape Wind.
This anti-environmental tampering followed House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi’s attempt to exempt Cape Wind, via the House green energy bill, from regulatory hurtles in the state’s Ocean Sanctuary’s Act.
Nantucket Sound, the federal donut-hole surrounded by state sanctuary water and fishing ground, should be zoned off-limits to alternative development due to existing, competing and conflicting use that is incompatible with the Cape Wind industrial wind turbine array.
This project is predicted to create a public safety hazard as echoed by Barrett and many others.
The National Air Traffic Controllers’ Cape TRACON stated to the USACE: “Placing 130 of these turbines in this area, in our opinion, is a disaster waiting to happen.” The loss of commercial fishing revenues of up to $13 million over the life of Cape Wind translates to Patrick’s traveling companion, Jim Gordon’s, $1.8 billion publicly subsidized windfall; and up-grades in accommodations on their next trip together to China.
